Two U.S. soldiers were killed and two others wounded when a sophisticated armored-piercing roadside bomb, or EFP, struck their vehicle in Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Friday. The attack took place on Thursday during combat operations in southern Baghdad, the military said in a statement. The explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, is a roadside bomb that shoots out fist-sized wads of nearly molten copper that can penetrate the U.S. armor vehicles, including Abrams tank.
Previously, the U.S. military had accused Iran, Iraq's eastern neighbor, of providing Iraqi Shiite militia with weapons and parts for sophisticated armored-piercing bombs. But Iran denied the accusations. More than 3,590 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the war broke out in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
