A third soldier has been killed in Iraq on Thursday, the U.S. military said on Friday.

The soldier died of wounds sustained during combat operations in western Baghdad, a military statement said.

Earlier, the military said that two soldiers were killed Thursday when their combat patrol was hit by an explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, an Iranian-designed sophisticated armored- piercing roadside bomb.

More than 3,590 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led war broke out in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
