Angola Police in northeastern Lunda Norte Province have from last week expelled more than 12,000 illegal foreigners from the province's diamond-rich localities of Maludi and Luaku. Joao Baptista, first superintendent in charge of the repatriation operation, told reporters on Thursday in Dundo, a border city neighboring the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that the operation dubbed
"Tranquility Operation" aims at " dismantling illegal exploration of diamonds by foreigners living in Lunda Norte territory." He added that the cooperation "will continue with micro- operations, coupled with mining companies involved in diamonds exploration," appealing them to effectively hold their respective concessions with a view to discouraging illegal diamond exploration. These illegal foreigners, including men, women and children, who were detained and sent to the Migration and Foreigners Services, were citizens from Mali, Equatorial Guinean, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, Liberia, DRC, Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria.
