The representatives of 23 countries met at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Friday to discuss the role of governments in promoting responsible corporate citizenship. The ministerial roundtable, chaired by UN General Assembly President Sheikha Haya Rashed al Khalifa, was part of a business leaders' summit organized by the United Nations in accordance with the so-called Global Compact initiative. Li Baodong, Chinese ambassador to the UN Office in Geneva, told the meeting the Global Compact initiative will help establish the partnership between the public and private sectors. The Global Compact calls on its participants to observe 10 universal principles related to human and labor rights, environmental protection and the fight against corruption. Some 4,000 organizations from 116 countries, including over 3,000 businesses, have so far subscribed to the compact. Li said that cooperation conducted under the global contract should firmly object the trade protectionism and push the establishment of a transparent, fair and non-discriminatory international trade mechanism. The summit event, opening on Thursday, brought together more than 1,000 leaders of corporations, civil society and governments.
