Officials from Afghanistan and Pakistan held talks in Ankara on Friday in a move to boost confidence-building between the two countries, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported. The officials held talks at Turkish Foreign Ministry building during their first meeting of "Joint Working Group" comprised of representatives from Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the report said. Pakistani Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan, Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Kabir Farahi and Undersecretary of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Ertugrul Apakan attended the meeting.
Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul received on Friday the members of the group. "Concerted efforts have given positive messages to public of the two countries," Gul said. He expressed his belief that mutual talks will help solution of problems.
The group was later received by Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Anatolia added.
Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, often trading blames for not doing enough to stop a resurgent Taliban, visited Ankara on April 29 to 30 at the invitation of Sezer, for talks under Turkey''s auspices aiming to cool tensions between the two neighbors in the war against terror.
