Togo's Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has announced the postponement of the forthcoming legislative elections, which were slated to be held on August 5, according to the Togolese government website Republicoftogo.com.
Nevertheless, the CENI, which is charged with organizing the polls, did not give a new date for holding the polls, reaffirming instead that the voter registration process will start on July 16 and end on August 17, 2007.
The CENI, which has increasingly come under criticism for prematurely announcing the date of these polls, seems to be playing it safe this time round. The organization of free and fair elections is the main condition imposed by the European Union before the normalization of ties with Togo, which were stopped in 2005, due to what the EU described as democratic shortcomings.
