Moroccan authorities issued their highest terror alert Friday, saying there is a "serious threat of a terrorist act."
According to reports from state news agency MAP, the Interior Ministry said the alert level was being raised to "maximum" following a meeting of police, intelligence and paramilitary force chiefs in the capital Rabat. Interior Minister Mohamed Benaissa said the authorities had "reliable intelligence information" and urged security staff to increase vigilance. The statement said the highest alert level "indicates a serious threat of a terrorist act and requires the extreme mobilization by the bodies concerned," but gave no further details. David Martinon, spokesman for French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said Friday that the president had cancelled his trip to Morocco scheduled for next week at the request of the Moroccan authorities "for scheduling reasons" and will visit the North African country in October. Morocco last raised its terror alert level in April following suicide bombings in the tourist city of Casablanca and larger suicide attacks in neighboring Algeria.
