New Jersey on Friday passed greenhouse gas-reduction legislation requiring the so-called Garden State to cut emissions of global-warming gases significantly. The law requires the state to reduce global-warming gases to 1990 levels by 2020 and ensure that greenhouse gas emissions do not exceed 80 percent of 2006 levels by 2050. The measure makes New Jersey the third U.S. state, behind California and Hawaii, to pass a comprehensive greenhouse gas-reduction law in the United States. "The states are making a difference; New Jersey is making a difference," said New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, who admonished the Bush administration for lagging behind on global warming. The signing of New Jersey's "Global Warming Response Act" took place on the eve of Live Earth, a series of concerts being staged around the world drawing attention to global warming. Live Earth was inspired by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore's campaign to force global warming onto the international political agenda by generating a groundswell of public concern.
