Three were killed and 17 others seriously injured on Saturday in an auto crash along the cross- state Ijebu-Ode-Ibadan road in Nigeria's southwest, local media reported.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the accident involved a commercial bus and a van belonging to the Nigeria Prison Service. An eyewitness account said that the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.

The eye-witness said the commercial bus driver took the alternative route in a bid to avoid traffic build up on the Lagos- Ibadan route caused by a church activity.

It took the police three hours to extricate the mangled bodies of the deceased from the wreckage, the eyewitness said.
