The government encouraged interventions by Ulemas, or religious scholars, parliamentarians, social workers and others for the release of the women and children held hostages, according to the prime minister, who added that their efforts could not yield positive results and no headway could be made because of the intransigence of the administration of Lal Masjid.
Aziz said efforts should be made to hand over all female students to their parents or guardians and the government will take care of all those who do not have anyone to look after them. A series of blasts and gunfire continued around besieged Lal Masjid Saturday. Besieged deputy chief of Lal Masjid, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi and a number of hard-core armed students, declaring that they preferred martyrdom to surrender, remained defiant inside the mosque. Officials said a total of 1,221 students, including 795 boys and 426 girls, have surrendered before law enforcing agencies so far, but could not confirmed the exact number of students remaining still inside the compound. Addressing a news briefing on Friday, Pakistani Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani Friday urged political and religious leaders, intellectuals, and general public to develop pressure on Lal Masjid-Jamia Hafsa administration to let the innocent children, female and male students come out of the premises of the mosque.
