Malaysia's government gave the assurance that workers from Bangladesh for the construction sector will have jobs and that they will be paid as stated in their contracts, Minister of Human Resources Fong Chan Onn said on Sunday.
Last week, some 300 Bangladeshi workers who came to work at a construction site in Sungai Chua, Port Dickson, Malaysia's southern state of Negeri Sembilan, alleged that they had not been given jobs or paid since they arrived in Malaysia in May.
The Ministry of Human Resource on Thursday held a meeting on the matter with four agencies involved in bringing them to Malaysia.
According to the monitoring conducted by the Manpower Department since Bangladeshi workers were allowed to come into Malaysia in May, a total of 93 of them have yet to get jobs and pay as stated in their contracts, said Fong.
"We will ask the companies concerned to pay them accordingly, failing which we will help them to refer their cases to the Industrial Court," the national news agency Bernama quoted Fong assaying.
"There is no reason for the foreign workers not being paid as the companies involved have the financial capability. It is their responsibility to pay workers brought over for them," he said.
