Alexander Ankvab, prime minister of Georgia's republic of Abkhazia was slightly injured in a grenade attack on Monday, Russian news agencies reported. "I am shell-shocked and have several fragment wounds in the back. The grenade hit the baggage hold of my office car in which I was driving from Gudauty to my office in Sukhumi," Ankvab told Interfax by phone.
The attack occurred near Gudauty at 8:15 a.m. (0415 GMT), he said. Ankvab was slightly injured and was driven home after receiving medical assistance in a hospital, according to Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh.
The driver of the prime minister's car was injured and remained in hospital. Police were searching the area and had toughened control of the main road leading to the regional capital Sukhumi, the report said.
Ankvab has survived three attacks since he was appointed prime minister in February 2005. Abkhazia, a strip of land on the Black Sea coast and an autonomous region in Georgia, declared independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union but is not recognized internationally.
