Uganda has been named as one of the countries facing displacement of people as a result of climate change, a new study by a British charity, Christian Aid, has said.

According to the study quoted by New Vision on Monday, scarcity of water and crop failure as a result of global warming would trigger off movements of people in both Uganda and Sudan.

The organization calculated that the effects of climate change will make at least 1 billion people homeless worldwide between now and 2050.

The charity pointed out that most of those on the move will remain in their own countries as internally displaced people, also referred to as "environmental refugees."

It noted that such people have no rights under international law and no voice, though in many cases their lives would be in danger.

The report''s main author, John Davison, pointed out that countries have known economic refugees, people who flee the country and seek employment elsewhere, but that the real crisis facing the world is the emergence of environmental refugees.

Uganda issued its own report on climate change earlier this year.
