UNRWA suspends projects in Gaza due to raw-materials shortage |

The United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) on Monday announced the suspension of its construction projects in Gaza Strip due to a severe shortage of raw-materials.
John Ging, chief of the UNRWA operations in Gaza, said in a statement e-mailed to reporters that the construction projects worth 93 million U.S. dollars had been suspended.
"The decision to suspend these projects was made following a severe shortage of cements and other needed construction raw- materials," Ging said in the statement.
He said that "the projects which have vital humanitarian marks include maintenance of destroyed homes for at least 16,000 Palestinian refugees who are living in miserable conditions."
"It's very important to reopen the crossing not only for bringing food supplies and medicines into Gaza, but also to let all other food products and construction materials inside," said Ging.
After Hamas movement militia took control of the security headquarters on June 14 in Gaza Strip, Israel shut down all the border crossings between Gaza and Israel and between Gaza and Egypt.
Ging warned that the ongoing closure of crossings "would duplicate the Palestinians' suffering and would lead to a humanitarian crisis that would harm the public health sector."
The statement anticipated that the projects suspended by the UNRWA would deprive 121,000 workers from work, adding "this means that more pressure would be exerted on the UNRWA to cover its humanitarian aid program."
