An Australian police officer is already in India to investigate into potential Australian links with the failed U.K. car bombings, Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio reported Tuesday.

Australian Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said another police officer has been sent to India to help with the investigation.

This followed the arrest last week of Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef in Australia in connection with the foiled U.K. terror attacks.

On Monday night, police asked a magistrate for an extra five days to detain Haneef, but were only given 48 hours.

Police said they will use the time to analyze material and conduct inquiries overseas.

Police can not question the 27-year-old doctor, who has been working in Australia since last year and was arrested at the Brisbane airport, until this latest extension expires, and if they do, his lawyer, Peter Russo, expects to be told.

"They've given me a verbal undertaking they would contact me should they wish to question Mohamed further," Russo was quoted as saying.

Russo said his client is not being treated fairly because he does not have access to the material that Federal police are relying on to keep him detained in relation to the failed U.K. car bombings.

Russo said the Australian Federal Police still have not provided full details about the case, and that he will write to Federal authorities to seek further information.
