Gunmen kidnapped a high-ranking Iraqi army officer and killed three policemen in separate incidents in northern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said on Tuesday.

"Unknown gunmen abducted on Monday Brigadier General Abdul Razaq Aseel, director of U.S. and Iraqi Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in the Iraqi northern city of Mosul who was visiting his family in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of Adhamiyah," the source, who declined to be identified, told Xinhua.

In a separate incident, unidentified armed men in their car gunned down three policemen in a popular market in the Sunni neighborhood of Adhamiyah on Tuesday morning, the source added.

The JCC is the liaison office between the U.S. troops and the Iraqi authorities in the city. Most of the main cities in Iraq have such centers to cooperate with the U.S. troops.

Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces accusing them of collaboration with U.S. occupation.

Adhamiyah is a Sunni enclave which has long been the hotbed of insurgency against the U.S. troops and the scene of sectarian violence with surrounding Shiite neighborhoods.
