Israeli defense establishment will be keeping a close eye on developments in Lebanon's domestic political arena, particularly in the coming two weeks, a local Ha' aretz report said on Tuesday. The report said that Israel is prepared to monitor the latest political development in Lebanon, even though intelligence analysts do not believe the growing tensions there will necessarily spill over and undermine the calm along the country's border with Israel. The crisis in Lebanon currently centers on the confrontation between Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and his anti-Syrian supporters, known as the March 14th movement, on one side, and Hezbollah and other pro-Syrian factions on the other side. Also looming in the next few months is the election of a president by parliament to replace the pro-Syrian Emile Lahoud whose term ends on November 25. The two camps seem unable to reach an agreement on the appointment of a new president. A suitable candidate approved by both sides could help move towards a resolution of the stand-off. Israeli intelligence officials in recent weeks said there was no change in Hezbollah's policies at this stage and that the group did not seem interested in a confrontation with the Israel in the near future, mostly because it is still recovering from the damage it sustained during the war last year. source: Xinhua
