Eight Iraqi security members were killed and four others wounded in two insurgent attacks in Salahudin province north of Baghdad on Tuesday, a provincial police source said. Unknown gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint south of Samarra City, 120 km north of Baghdad, killing five soldiers and injuring three others in the morning, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Separately, gunmen attacked a police patrol on the main road near the town of Yethrib, 70 km north of Baghdad, killing three policemen and wounding one more, the source said, adding that the attack also damaged a police vehicle. Since the bombing of the two minarets of the Shiite sacred Imam Askari shrine last month, the Iraqi government intensified the presence of its security forces on the main road between Baghdad and Samarra to avoid surge in sectarian violence between the two Shiite and Sunni communities.
Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces accusing them of collaboration with U.S. occupation.
