French president Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Algiers Tuesday morning for an official state visit, which is expected to last only a few hours.

On arrival at the Algiers International Airport, the president was received by his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

During his short visit, Sarkozy will hold discussions with the Algerian president notably on his project for the creation of " Mediterranean Union," according to well-informed sources.

This is the first visit by the French president, who is also expected to visit Tunisia, outside Europe. Sarkozy was also scheduled to travel to Morocco, but Morocco called for postponement of the visit due to what it described as scheduling problems.
