Mortar barrage struck the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad on Tuesday, a well- informed police source said.

About 10 mortar rounds landed on the Green Zone, which houses the Iraqi government offices, several foreign embassies including the U.S. embassy, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

It was not known whether there was any casualty caused by the attack, the source said.

Plumes of smoke could be seen rising above the vast area on the west side of the Tigris River, where locates the Green Zone, he added.

The area, supposed to be the safest area in Baghdad, has been frequently hit by mortar and rocket attacks.
