The Sri Lankan government has tried to appeal for clemency to the government of Saudi Arabia in the case of a Sri Lankan teenager who had been sentenced to death, a government minister said Tuesday. Keheliya Rambukwella, the minister of Foreign Employment, said the deputy minister of foreign affairs Hussain Bhaila is to leave for Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to meet Saudi officials. "Mr. Bhaila will go along with the family of the girl," Rambukwella said, adding that the government plans to appeal to the Saudi authorities on humanitarian grounds. Rizana Nafeek, a 17-year-old girl, was sentenced to death by the Saudi Arabian court for killing an infant while serving as a house maid in the kingdom. The infant died while Nafeek was bottle-feeding the baby. Rambukwella said there exists only a remote chance for a pardon but the government was trying its best. The international human rights watch dog Amnesty International said earlier that Nafeek had had no access to a lawyer during her trial and a confession had been obtained from her under duress.
