Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement will increase political and financial pressure on rival Hamas Islamists which took over Gaza Strip, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
"Fatah will fight Hamas politically and financially after its failure to defeat them militarily," spokesman Jamal Nazzal said in a statement faxed to the press.
"Though the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has no room for military action against Hamas in Gaza, President Abbas still has wide chances for political and fiscal measures," the spokesman added. Hamas movement accuses President Abbas and his faction of imposing collective punishment on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip by not working to open the Israeli-controlled crossing points and depriving Hamas loyalists of full salaries.
After Hamas captured the PNA and Fatah security compounds last month, Abbas has sacked Hamas coalition government and appointed an emergency cabinet of independent ministers and figures acceptable to the international community.
The new government headed by new Prime Minister Salam Fayyad " can pay salaries for the PNA employees, and Hamas is left empty- handed and has no future to offer to the people," Nazzal continued, asserting that the Western nation will only support Abbas. Last week, the Ramallah-based Palestinian emergency government decided to pay the full-time civil and security employees after Israel transferred 118 million U.S. dollars of the frozen tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority. However, his government excluded about 23,000 employees that were employed on temporary contracts by Hamas-led government last year. Source: Xinhua
