The Indonesian government will firmly turn down a request for the establishment of the GAM party by former Aceh rebels because the party's name is against the existing regulations, a senior official said Wednesday. GAM, the Indonesian acronym for the Free Aceh Movement, cannot be used as the name of the new party because it implies secessionism, State Secretary Hatta Radjasa told reporters here. A GAM party would breach the peace accord signed between the government and GAM leaders in Helsinki in August 2005 and the law on Aceh governance. "It is clear that the party name contravenes the spirit of the Helsinki agreement and we will certainly oppose it," he said. The accord ended 26-year rebellion by GAM in the Indonesian westernmost province. The GAM party was founded last week by former military wing leader Muzakir Manaf. But it must get Jakarta approval to qualify for the 2009 elections.
