Major figures of Cambodia''s royalist parties on Wednesday voiced a higher tone for merging their forces in a bid to secure a niche in the next general election in 2008.

Prince Sisowath Thomico said that he decided to leave the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) to officially join the co-ruling Funcinpec Party in an attempt to help collect the royalist forces to participate in the general election.

"The results of the commune councils election on April 1 showed that the royalist parties have lost most of their support. If we are still separated like this, our future will become bleak," he told a press conference in Phnom Penh in presence of Funcinpec''s second deputy president, Prince Sisowath Siriroath.

The future of the royalist parties depends on Prince Norodom Ranariddh, for he is the key for reconciliation of the royalist parties, said Thomico, adding that all the important royal politicians are now in Funcinpec except Ranariddh.

Thomico used to preside the Sangkum Jitniyum Party (SJP), but claimed in June to merge with NRP.

Also on Wednesday, Nov Sowathero, spokesman for Funcinpec, said that Funcinpec and NRP, as sister parties, should merge before the next general election in a bid to strengthen the force of the royalist parties to win more support from the voters.
