The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) rejected on Wednesday three initiatives proposed by local leftist factions for reconciliation with rival secular Fatah, considering them partial and incomplete.
The initiatives were proposed respectively by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and the National Initiative Party.
The initiatives call for a withdrawal of Hamas militia from the security headquarters and facilities seized from pro-Fatah security forces in Gaza.
Besides, a call for holding early elections was common in the three proposals represented by the three parties. However, Hamas, which won parliamentary elections last year, completely opposed early polls. "It is unwise to demand early elections," Hamas lawmaker Ismail al-Ashqar told reporters in Gaza, adding the initiatives did not clearly specify the core of the problem. Meanwhile, the spokesman renewed the call for an immediate and unconditional talks with President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement. "We are ready to start dialogue under Islamic and Arab mediation and with the participation of all national and Islamic factions... but without any preconditions," al-Ashqar said. He also insisted that President Abbas should retract his recent decrees, which suspended the Palestinian basic law.
