Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas will meet next Monday in the West Bank city of Jericho, local daily Ha'aretz said on Wednesday, citing state officials. The meeting to be held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Jericho will mark the first time for an Israeli prime minister to visit the Palestinians, the report said. It also revealed that Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met on Sunday with Palestinian emergency government's Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who is also functioning as the foreign minister, to discuss "improving the lives of the Palestinian people, without compromising Israel's security." Abbas disbanded the Hamas-Fatah unity government last month after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip following days of violent clashes between the two Palestinian factions. He then appointed Fayyad to form an emergency government, which won pledges of financial support from major Western powers who had imposed a crippling economic embargo on the PNA after Hamas came to power in March 2006.
Israel and the new Palestinian government formally opened high- level contacts last month, a move marking an end to Israel's 15- month-long boycott of the Palestinian government.
