The wife of a foreign doctor arrested in Australia for alleged links with foiled terror attacks in Britain on Thursday called for his release, as the doctor entered his 10th day of detention. Mohammed Haneef, the 27-year-old Indian doctor, was arrested last week in Brisbane, capital of the state of Queensland, as part of investigations into the failed U.K. car bomb plot. He has not been charged -- allowable under Australia's new terror laws. He spoke to his wife, Firdous Arshiya, who is in Bangalore of India, through phone on Wednesday. "I just inquired about his health obviously, and he inquired about the health of the family," Arshiya told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio Thursday. "He's alright, he's fine and doing well," she said. Arshiya said her husband did not talk about the investigation into his alleged involvement in the terror plot.
"He didn't say anything about all those things, he just talked about his health and said he'd come out soon," she said. "I would have felt better if he was doing his job with the hospital," she said. Meanwhile, the Australian Federal Police's investigation has now spread to India with one Australian police officer already been sent to India. But the decision to send the officer to the sub-continent caused immediate diplomatic ructions between the two nations. Media reports said New Delhi's Central Bureau of Investigation had asked Australia for a formal request for information ahead of any inquiries.
