One Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier was killed and two others were lightly wounded early on Thursday during clashes with Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, the army told Xinhua.

The IDF troops entered the central Gaza Strip to "counter terror activities", an IDF spokeswoman said, adding that the soldiers found militants approaching them and exchanged fire with them, leaving one soldier killed and two others lightly wounded.

The IDF forces were still in the Gaza area to carry out operation, she noted.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.

Meanwhile, a Ha'aretz report said that the casualties were caused by a bomb, which exploded near them in the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.
