The season's fourth typhoon Man-yi hit the main island of southern Japan's Okinawa Prefecture on Friday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said earlier in the day.

Part of the Amami Islands chain was also affected by the strong typhoon, which is to reach the southern part of Kyushu Island on Saturday, according to the forecast.

The typhoon was heading north at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour over the sea southwest of Okinawa as of 8:50 a.m., packing winds of up to 252 kph with an atmospheric pressure of 930 hectopascals near the center, the agency said.

Up to 300 millimeters of rainfall is expected in southern Kyushu by Saturday morning, it added.
