In the statement, Australia''s Foreign Affairs Department said the security situation in Zimbabwe was deteriorating and Australians could be caught in the violence should they decide to visit the country.

"We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Zimbabwe at this time due to high level of criminal activities, the absence of the rule of law and deteriorating economic condition which could lead to civil unrest at any time. This includes visits to national parks and the Victoria Falls," read the statement.

"In these circumstances, departure options may be severely limited. Zimbabwe is experiencing hyperinflation, mass unemployment, a severe shortage of foreign exchange and the breakdown of basic services such as water and transport. Health services are unreliable. Basic commodities such as food, fuel and medical supplies are now in short supply, leading to panic-buying in shops and supermarkets," read the statement.

Australia, together with some European countries and the American government, imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe at the instigation of the opposition MDC.

The Australian government banned that country''s national cricket team from travelling to Zimbabwe later this year again citing security reasons.
