Russia successfully test fired a new air defense missile system, an officer said Friday.
Life fire tests of the S-400 Triumph air defense missile system were conducted at the Russian Defense Ministry's testing ground in the Astrakhan region on July 12-13.
"The life fire tests have been successful. All targets were hit. The tests were carried out by a regiment that is to assume combat duty using this air defense missile in the Moscow region in the near future," aide to the Air Force commander Alexander Drobyshevsky was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
S-400 air defense missile systems boast much more advanced jamming resistance features, target engagement channels and capabilities to hit high-speed targets than their predecessor S- 300 system, according to specialists.
"Such systems are capable of operating in near space and fulfilling non-strategic missile defense tasks," Col. Gen. Yury Solovyev, commander of the special-purpose command troops, told journalists earlier.
