Mexico City's Water System has detected at least five zones with cracks in Mexico's capital city, which could generate a critical or big risky situation for its citizens.
"The cracks are caused by the rocky grounds or because they are refill areas," Mexico City's Water System official Julia Rivera said on Friday.
There is no direct relation with the cave-in problems and water extractions, Rivera added.
Rivera said the affected zones are in the areas of Iztapalapa, Venustiano Carranza, Gustavo A. Madero, Miguel Hidalgo and Tlahuac.
Director for Water System Planning Bernardo Chavarria said that water extractions have to continue despite the cave-in because Mexico City's water supply depends on it.
Earth Science researcher in National Politechnic Institute (IPN) Jose Luis Hernandez said the cracking problem is not new and was caused by Mexico City's natural ground conditions.
