Israel agreed to let five exiled Palestinian officials back to the West Bank to join a decisive meeting of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to be held in Ramallah Wednesday, London-based al-Hayat Daily reported on Saturday. "Israel agreed to allow Farouq Al Qaddoumi, Mohammed Jihad, Mohammed Ghneim and exiled leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) Nayef Hawatmeh," the report said, without giving the name of the fifth PLO member.
President Abbas, who is also PLO chairman, asked the permission of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for the entry of the five senior officials during a four-way summit held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in June. The five officials had been allowed to enter the Palestinian territories in 1996 to attend the Palestinian National Council meeting but they refused after Israel set certain conditions to their entry. Al Qaddoumi may not agree this time, as he reiterated in earlier statements that he would not enter the Palestinian territories as long as they are still occupied, the report said. Abbas called for irregular meeting of the PLO Central Council to decide on holding early presidential and legislative elections in the Palestinian territories after Islamic Hamas movement took control of the Gaza Strip last month.
