At 14 Tesco supermarkets across Britain were closed on Saturday afternoon by police in a security scare, according to Sky News reports.

Sky reported that some of the stores were shut after receiving bomb threats, and the closures affected stores in Wales, Scotland and England, including London.

Police have not yet revealed why the supermarkets were shut down but said on one had been hurt.

"These stores have been temporarily closed as a precaution for public safety," a police spokeswoman said. "Police are investigating a series of incidents in a number of locations across the country involving Tesco stores."

Police initially closed off the car park leading to the store and several other neighboring shops, witnesses said, and then car parks were evacuated and drivers ushered through red lights by police.

Some supermarket staff were sent home for the weekend. A Tesco spokeswoman said "Tesco is working with the police following a series of incidents."
