The Assets Examination Committee ( AEC) of Thailand was preparing on Monday to freeze more assets belonging to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's family, local media reported.
Last week, the panel froze three bank accounts owned by Panthongtae Shinawatra, son of Thaksin, totaling 500 million baht (15 million U.S. dollars).
The order followed the tracking of billions of baht in similar accounts owned by Thaksin's immediate family members, the Bangkok Post said on its website.
The AEC stated that the latest freeze order is aimed at acquiring assets which had allegedly been pulled out of Panthongtae's bank account before the AEC ordered a freeze. It is believed up to 500 million baht had been withdrawn and converted into three cashiers' cheques.
Since last month, the AEC ordered assets of Thaksin and his family members in scores of local bank accounts frozen on charges of malfeasance while he was premier and unusually wealthy.
The ruling came after the Constitution Tribunal on May 30 disbanded Thai Rak Thai party, founded by Thaksin, and three small political parties on electoral fraud during a general election in April last year. The election was later ordered null and void.
However, through a video clip released recently, Thaksin said the AEC's order was unfair since they did not have enough evidence.
