The Tongan government has extended the state of emergency imposed last year for the eighth time.

Tonga Now, a local news service, reported Monday the state of emergency restricted to the island of Tongatapu was due to expire Monday night but the government has decided to extend them for another month.

Information from government said, as a result of the continuing monitoring of the security situation in the country, it has extended the period for the state of emergency which comes under the Emergency Powers (Maintenance of Public Order) Regulations 2007.

The emergency period was initially imposed following November's riots that torched and damaged most of the major stores and Asian businesses in downtown Nuku'alofa.
