U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has canceled her planned trip to Ghana to attend the annual African Growth and Opportunities Act forum in Accra this week to focus on the Iraq problem, the State Department said Monday. "She found that it is important to be in town here so that she has time for discussion about a number of different issues ... on the broader Middle East, Iraq," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. Last week, Rice postponed her trip to Israel and the Palestinian autonomous region due to begin this week.
"The secretary will postpone a planned step in Jerusalem and Ramallah until the end of the month," McCormack said at the time. Rice preferred to remain home amid a fierce debate over the war in Iraq, the spokesman said. The Bush administration has been under growing pressure on the troop withdrawal issue in the wake of an interim progress report released last week which concluded that the Iraqi government has failed to meet key political, economic and security goals set by the United States.
