"We have learned a lot from our past mistakes and are henceforth aware of our blunders and foolish mistakes," local press quoted Togolese president Faure Gnassingbe as saying Monday, as the country prepares to hold legislative elections which have already been postponed twice. "We have obviously experienced problems in the past regarding the organization of harmonious elections, because of lack of consensus," he said, noting that today everything is being done within the framework of a government of national unity and also in framework of the universal political agreement signed on August 20 last year by all political actors in the country. Gnassingbe said the prevailing commitment is aimed at " refocusing on new and convincing foundations for constructing a pacifying democracy where all fundamental rights of each Togolese citizen are recognized, respected and taken into consideration."
"We are only at the beginning of a very long process, but we are convinced that today's choices, if made well, will have profound effects on the results we are expecting tomorrow," said the president. "We are thus betting on Togolese citizens' capacity to turn a new page, and get down to serious work of achieving better future for their country," he said, noting "we need to face this challenge by being strict with ourselves, with our clear analysis, and notably with patriotism in all our actions."
