Ethiopia's Federal High Court on Monday sentenced opposition leaders of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) from 18 months in jail to life sentence terms. Hailu Shawel was given life sentences.
The opposition leaders were convicted of "trying to overthrow the government through force, treason and inciting violence" in connection with the unrest that followed the May 2005 elections, the official Ethiopian News Agency reported, quoting a court ruling. The Federal High Court stripped them of the right to elect or be elected following their release. The crimes committed by the convicts "were serious and were liable to get death sentences and that all of the defendants had committed series of crimes," the court said.
