Spain on Monday welcomed a plan by U.S. President George W. Bush to hold a Middle East peace conference this fall.

The proposal would help remove obstructions on peace in the region,Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos told Spanish media.

He was accompanying Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on an official visit in Mexico.

Bush, amid growing isolation at home over his Iraq policy, made a fresh effort on Monday to revive the stalled Middle East peace process.

He announced new financial assistance for the Palestinians and called for a new international conference this fall.
