Members of a regional group in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca clashed with police for several hours on Monday, leaving at least 50 people injured, including 20 state police officers, 30 demonstrators arrested and several vehicles gutted by fire.

Teachers from the National Education Workers' Union and members of the Oaxaca Popular People's Assembly (APPO) on Monday requested a local stadium be used for the Guelaguetza, a local festival to be held on July 23-30. State police refused the request and set up barriers to prevent the group from heading to the stadium. In the Cerro del Fortin neighborhood, police and protesters clashed.

City and state police used tear gas against the teachers armed with sticks, stones and fireworks.

The clashes started at 11:00 a.m. (1700 GMT) and ended at around 2:00 p.m. (2000 GMT). Private cars and five municipal buses were burned. One of the burning vehicles damaged a hotel.
