Most Poles are continuing to oppose the deployment of the U.S. missile defense shield in their country, according to a poll released on Tuesday.

The survey, conducted by the Polish CBOS polling center, showed that 55 percent of Poles are opposed to the shield, a fall from an earlier 60 percent recorded last month.

Meanwhile, 28 percent of those questioned expressed support for placing such an installation in Poland, up slightly from the previous month's 26 percent, the survey said.

The poll was conducted between June 29 and July 2 and released a day after Polish President Lech Kaczynski expressed his strongest support to date for the plan.

About 1,064 people have been questioned and the margin of error for the poll was plus or minus three percentage points, CBOS said.

The United States unveiled its plan in January to place a radar system in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missiles in Poland, as components of its missile defense shield. Russia has voiced strong opposition to the deployment.
