UN Special Envoy Jan Eliasson held a meeting with UN and AU officials in Khartoum on Tuesday to assess the latest developments in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.

The meeting between Eliasson and the AU-UN Joint Mediation Support Team was the first activity of the UN envoy since he arrived in the Sudanese capital Monday night.

His visit will also include a series of meetings with senior government officials, representatives of the displaced people, UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations before paying a trip to Darfur, according to a statement issued by the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).

Eliasson's three-day visit to Sudan aims at speeding up preparations for peace talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel movements which had not signed the 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement.

Eliasson arrived from Tripoli where he co-chaired with AU Special Envoy Salim Ahmed Salim a two-day international meeting on Darfur.

The Final Communique adopted by the meeting reconfirmed the AU- UN lead of the political process in partnership with regional actors.

The Meeting endorsed the proposal of the AU and UN Envoys to convene a meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, on Aug. 3-5, with leading personalities of the non-signatory movements to facilitate the preparations for negotiations.

The Meeting concluded that invitations for the new round of negotiations should be issued by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, before the end of August 2007.
