Russia has welcomed the shutdown of the nuclear reactor in Yongbyon of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Foreign Ministry said in a commentary posted on its official website Tuesday.
"We are satisfied with the fact that, following the dragged-out resolution of the 'financial issue', the sides involved in the six- party talks have begun to practically implement the 'February package' of agreements. We positively view Pyongyang's stoppage of the nuclear facilities in Yongbyon and welcome the beginning of compensation fuel oil shipments to the DPRK from the Republic of Korea," it said.
"We believe that these have been first real positive changes in the cause of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in the past years," it said. The United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on Monday that the DPRK has shut down the Yongbyon nuclear reactor.
