The Bush administration announced on Tuesday that it would financially sanction any individual or organization thought to destabilize Iraq.
According to a new executive order signed by U.S. President George W. Bush, the U.S. Department of Treasury and other government agencies will freeze financial assets belong to people or groups that the United States believes to be "working to threaten stability in Iraq."
"All agencies of the United States government are hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order," said the order.
The order did not name any person, company or group as such " destabilizer."
But the Treasury Department said it would draw up such a list " in coming weeks and months."
White House spokesman Tony Snow said the order will be targeting terrorist and insurgent groups, including those supported by Syria and Iran.
Bush has issued similar orders to financially sanction individuals and groups the U.S. government thought to help specific groups, such as al-Qaida and Hezbollah.
