The UN Security Council hailed on Tuesday recent international initiatives aimed at enhancing security, stability and development in Afghanistan.
On Tuesday morning, the 15-member council heard a briefing on Afghanistan from Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hedi Annabi, who discussed recent developments on the ground.
Council members then adopted a presidential statement in which they welcomed the recent international initiatives, including the annual Afghanistan Development Forum, followed by the April 29-30 meeting of the Joint Coordination Monitoring Board, the June 21 Conference on Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups for the Stabilization of Afghanistan and the July 2-3 Rome Conference on the Rule of Law in Afghanistan.
"The Security Council encourages all relevant parties to ensure full and timely implementation of the outcomes of these events," the statement said.
The council also reiterated its support for the continuing endeavors by the Afghan government to further improve the security situation and to continue to address the threat posed by the Taliban, al-Qaida and other extremist groups.
The council condemned "in the strongest terms all suicide attacks against civilians and Afghan and international forces and their destabilizing effects on the security and stability of Afghanistan," the statement said. Source: Xinhua
