Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to pay an official visit to Syria on Thursday in which he would meet his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad and other senior officials, the official SANA news agency reported.

Ahmadinejad, heading a delegation of senior economic and political figures, was expected to discuss with the Syrian leaders bilateral relations and means to increase cooperation between the two countries as well as regional and international issues.

Ahmadinejad's visit, two days after Assad's inauguration as president for a second seven-year term, would be his second trip here since he became president in July 2004.
