U.S. President George W. Bush telephoned United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan on Wednesday to seek support for his new Middle East plan, the White House said. The two leaders talked about the situation in the Middle East and Khalifa's current travel in the Middle East and Europe, White House spokesman Tony Snow said. Bush "reviewed key points made in his speech on Monday and discussed the need to provide strong support for (Palestinian) President (Mahmud) Abbas and Prime Minister (Salam) Fayyad," Snow said. "The president also congratulated President Khalifa on the steady and generous support the UAE has given the Palestinian Authority," the spokesman said.
Bush called on Monday for a new international conference this fall on how to achieve a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
In addtiont to offering financial aide to the Palestinian authorities, Bush also called on the international community to rise to the moment and provide decisive support to Palestinian leaders working for peace. He has telephoned leaders of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt Monday to urge them to support the Palestinian government led by Abbas.
