At least eight people were killed and many more injured in a suicide car blast attack in northwestern Pakistan's Hangu Thursday, private DAWN TV news reported.

The attack targeted a police training college in Hangu town of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), according to DAWN TV.

Recruits were assembled in ground for drill as an explosives- laden car rammed into the main gate of the college.

The TV report said the casualties might rise, adding that 22 injured people were shifted to local hospital for treatment.

Escalating violence were seen in Pakistan's northwest frontier since early July where scores of security personnel were killed in deadly bombing attacks.

A police recruitment center in NWFP on July 15 was hit by a suicide explosion in which at least 26 people were killed and some 56 others injured.

A suicide blast occurred outside a rally camp in the capital city Islamabad on July 17 evening, leaving at least 16 dead and over 40 injured.

Country-wide security alert has been in place following the deadly attacks and Pakistani government has decided to send more troops to volatile areas of NWFP and the tribal areas.
