The U.S. military said on Thursday that five of its troops were killed in Iraq, including four in a single bomb attack in Baghdad. Insurgents killed a U.S. soldier with small arms fire near the Rushdi Mullah area south of the capital on Thursday, said a military statement.
Earlier in the day, another statement said that four American soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter were killed on Wednesday when an improvised explosive device IED struck their patrol during combat operations in eastern Baghdad. The names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.
The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to some 3,625 since the Iraq war broke out in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
